So, being a long time Fantasy/DnD fan, I found this book to be one of the most fun reads I can remember. The way the author takes the traditional "fantasy" genre and merges it with the traditional "Sam Spade" detective trope is absolutely fantastic.What I liked most is his way of taking the concept of magic as a substitute for "technology" and creating a world work it actually works and makes sense. This book was a hilarious romp into the wonderful and absurd and I cannot wait for the sequel!!!!
If you like humor, great action, and fabulous character development the you'll love this book. It was a very fast read that I enjoyed so much and it made me wanted more. The locations these characters travel are so easily visualized by this great story telling. The humor in this book make you want to join up with this bunch and be a part of their journey!

I received this book for free. I am voluntarily leaving this review and all opinions expressed herein are mine.This is the first book in the Spade Case Files series. It is a standalone book with no cliffhanger ending but it does set up the next adventure for Spade.Here, Spade is a dwarf and a detective. He has been ostracized from his clan. Spade spends his days sleeping and drinking. One day, Spade is warned not to accept a case from a certain attractive female elf. So when she comes to his office to hire him, he immediately tells her no. But, she's pretty, the job is easy, would be good money and she promises him that she can help get him back into his clan - so he's in. The job - to find the female elf's brother and report his activities. But as Spade gets deeper into the case - all is not quite as it initially appeared.What fun! Spade is a great character - some of his musings are very comical such as complaining about the drink at breakfast being very sweet and low on alcohol until he's informed that it's juice or that he doesn't do well in a fair fight so he tries not to engage in fair fights very often. The world building is very good and I liked that humans were mentioned as being part of it but not involved in the story at all. The story is a great mix of fantasy with detective noir and really fun characters. Looking forward to Spade's next adventure.I listened to this book - The narrator was fantastic. Each character had his own voice, which was completely consistent with their character and enhanced the story. The narration had a great place and wonderful comic timing.
I had a lot of fun with this book. I did not realize it was a parody (except for the name, of course), until after I had read it. It was very, very well written. The plot was twistey-turney, but well explained as you went along, and was well developed. The characters were a hoot. They interacted well, the dialog was just plain fun, and they remained true to their characters throughout. Our Dwarf protagonist, Spade, with his lizard sidekicks, was a marvelously funny character. The lizards were amazing, too. I honestly think this is the first fantasy book I have read that had such humor consistently throughout. Many try, but few succeed. I have started numerous "humorous" books, only to put them down after 20 or 25 pages because they just were not well done and certainly were not funny--even if the premise held promise. What a joy to read The Malaise Falchion! It was great! I probably should have given five stars, but I seldom do for just fun reading. I am truly looking forward to more of Mr. Spade; Mr. B, you are under a lot of pressure now to produce another book as good as this one. Thank you, and more, please, please, please!
